There are two different phenotypes of cat's claw. Both contain a whole range of different plant compounds, including POA's (pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids) and TOA's (tetracyclic oxindole alkaloids). The POA's are said to have an immune system regulating effect, while the TOA's are said to inhibit this effect. Samento is an extract of the rare pentacyclic phenotype of cat's claw, which contains almost exclusively POA's. This phenotype in particular is associated with immune system-strengthening and anti-inflammatory properties.
