Tangarana is an extract from the bark of the Palo Santo tree, which, like frankincense and myrrh, comes from the balsam tree family. Burning Palo Santo wood is a millennia-old tradition of indigenous peoples in Central and South America. They said the balsamic-scented smoke had a cleansing, harmonizing effect. But they also attribute effects to the tree on a physical level and use an extract of the fragrant wood against syphilis and other microbial infections. When the Spanish arrived in Peru in the 16th century, they brought the wood with them to Europe and sold it there as a remedy during the syphilis epidemic.
