Quina is an extract from cinchona bark. Despite its name, cinchona does not come from China, but from South America, where it thrives in the mountainous regions of Bolivia and Peru at over 1,400 meters. The indigenous people living there have valued and used them for many centuries, especially for diseases such as malaria, fever and various infections. In the middle of the 16th century, cinchona made it to our latitudes and was even included in the British pharmacopoeia. Its name probably comes from Count Chinchón's wife, who was cured of intermittent fever by the bark of the tree. Its ingredient quinine is still used today to make malaria drugs.
